[rethinking] Personal Space

" People like to keep certain distances between themselves and other people or things, and this invisible bubble of space that constitutes each person's 'territory' is one of the key dimensions of modern society. "

How does space affect our relations, cross-cultural interactions and architecture?

our sketches resulted in deciding on working towards manipulating the personal bubbles through merging and tearing. As people get closer, the bubbles would react to each other.

could one also tear the other’s space and enter?

Process

Tools

To represent our visual narrative, we decided to use a motion sensing input device, Kinect. Our purpose was to be able to interactively use our design and make it a multi-user platform, as well as having the flexibility to project it on a real-time screen, enhancing the performativity of our production.

We represented the body line through sorting each point using C#, which is based on the Nurbs Curves.

After much exploration, we decided not to pursue the tearing effects because of heavy processing and difficulty to achieve refined rendering effects.

Projection

We have decided to experiment with a projector, and the possibilities of investigating some of the movements through freezing the moment, aka baking!

Visible Input Points

Accumulative Motion

By baking certain moments of the body movements, we were able to project an accumulation of body performance over time, as you can see in the videos below.

It's Baking Time!

Future Proposition

In addition to real time translation of bodily movements with imageries, we also experimented with body movements and sound. While the user is changing the elevation of their arms, the pitch of the sound changes with it, making the body a living and customizable instrument.
